An in-depth look at the Detroit hip-hop community is the focus of “Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black World,” a just-published book by German-born, London-based author Isabelle Esling.

In the 170-page volume, Esling, who started theeminemblog.com in 2005, traces not only the Detroit rapper’s multiplatinum career but also his roots in the Detroit rap world, including his friendship with the late MC Proof as well as associations with underground rappers such as Kaos, Mystro, Awesome Dre, Joe to the D and many others. The book chronicles Eminem’s acceptance in that scene and the influence it had on his musical evolution.

“Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene” retails for $15 and can be ordered at www.amberbooks.com. A digital version is also available for Kindle and Nook.

Why I created this blog...

I set up this blog in order to let all Eminem and Detroit Rap fans and hip hop fans know that I have  my book entitled " Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene-White Kid In A Black Music World " out.

"Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene" is a very informative book. It is indeed the fruit of a decade of investigative work about the artist, musical and biographical facts.

I have also spent counttless hours investigating the Detroit rap scene, interviewing artists, reviewing CDs and songs.

" Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene" is dedicated to the memory of Big Proof. It contains some excusive materials such as an unreleased Big Proof interview I did with the brilliant artist back in 2006, gives voice to early witnesses ( and protagonists) of the Detroit scene such as Uncle ILL, Omar de Fati, 5 ELA and many more.

Be prepared to be totally immersed into the D Town s hip hop world!

If you are fond of Eminem, you probably read a lot of books about the talented artist.
Some of them might be quite interesting and also deliver a lot of info. However, a lot of Eminem biographers seem to miss an essential point: a lot of them tend to separate Marshall Mathers from the context in which he grew up into: the Detroit scene.
An understanding of the Detroit rap scene is vital to understanding Eminem as an artist and also as a human being. He is not just some random white guy who is making black music; he actually grew roots in black America.
My book offers a good understanding of the rough, original context of Detroit City, its boiling hip hop scene. It features numerous local Detroit artists that I have interviewed and whose music I have reviewed for years…some of them, like 5 ELA are the original hip hop pioneers of the D Town.
I gave voice to most of them, and also featured opinions that were not in favor of Eminem s artistry.
With its global overview of the Detroit hip hop scene, its history of the D12 group, the precise info it contains about Eminems career and life story, it will certainly raise your interest and give you a new perspective of rap mogul Marshall Mathers aka Eminem.
My book is available directly on amazon and on Barnes and Noble. You will be able to read some exerpts of my book on Amazon.

Please be numerous to review it, as I value your feedback. I wish you all a nice and pleasant read!

With never before seen photos and interviews and dedicated to the memory of Big Proof, the founder of D12 and Eminem,  Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World will take you deep into the heart of the Detroit Ghetto with Eminem, long before D12 and the Aftermath with D12.

If you want to understand Eminem, you have to understand where he comes from.  You can't even begin to think about Eminem without mentioning Detroit and the Detroit Rap Scene;  Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World will bring you to the people, the rappers, the Detroit ghetto, the early years, that inspired him and made him become the person he is now.

I loved Kaos and Mystro, Awesome Dre, Proof, Smiley, Prince Vince, Jo to the D, Detroit Box, AWOL, DmW, a lot of local stuff. Awesome Dre’s ‘ Master Of Philology’, Merciless Amir’s ‘ A Day Without A Rhyme’ and Prince Vince’s ‘ Changes’ were some of my favorites.  It made me feel proud to be from the D and made the possibilities of making some noise out of the city seem more realistic.  I think I owe a lot to the foundation they all laid, for sure.  (Eminem).

Coming from a poor background in Detroit, Eminem struggled hard while being underground and made his own way to become a superstar. His life story is far from being a fairy tale. Bullied at school, experiencing reverse racism on a daily basis, coming from a dysfunctional family with a drug dependant history;  Marshall Mathers carried the dream to become a rapper:  A dream that was so huge and seemed so foolish, that neither his teachers, his family, nobody...except Big Proof, and then Dr. Dre would take him seriously.

Growing up on the black side of 8 Mile in Detroit, the young boy totally integrated into the culture and focused on the same musical interest as his friends.  Eminem also lived on the other side of 8 Mile in Detroit, where he had a bunch of poor white friends as well.  Experiencing both sides of the ghetto provided Eminem with treasured bridges to both cultures.

With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, and Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, ASCAP Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Gold and Platinum Albums, under his belt, Eminem is one of the best-selling rap artists ever.  Discovered by legendary record producer Dr. Dre, Eminem was signed to Dre's Aftermath Entertainment Record Label in 1999 and he brought along his D12 rap group members and other Detroit rappers, all who would go on to have their own record deals and sell Gold and Platinum Albums.

EMINEM and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World chapters include: “The Detroit Hip Hop Scene”; “The Dirty Dozen – The Story Behind the D12 Group”; “Eminem’s Artistic Evolution"; “White Kid in a Black Music World".

Eminem and the Detroit Rap Scene: White Kid in a Black Music World was written by Isabelle Esling a graduate of the University of Metz, France, where she studied Liberal Arts and Languages.  Ms. Esling has been teaching foreign languages in public and private schools as a German and French teacher.

With a deep passion for writing and music, black music in particular, Ms. Esling discovered Eminem in 2001 and has been enthusiastic about his career and music ever since.  In 2003 Gavin Sheridan, a technical writer and professional blogger offered Ms. Esling a position as a contributing writer for his blog.

In 2005 with Gavins help Ms. Esling started the Eminem blog,  www.theeminemblog.com/

where she has internationally discussed and written about Eminem, the Detroit Rap Scene and other Hip Hop related subjects.  Isabelle Esling has interviewed many important Detroit artists such as Dina Rae, DJ Butter, Big Proof of D12 and many others.  The Eminem Blog has gained her a worldwide audience of readers and she has contributed to numerous Hip Hop websites such as Music Mouth UK, Detroit Rap.com, Michigan Bands and D Townie. In 2011 Ms. Esling was signed to Amber Communications Group, Inc.

Ms. Esling's challenge was to get to the essence of the Detroit ghetto and its rappers, so that she could find the real character of Marshall Mathers III.  That meant interviewing, sometimes arguing, perhaps disagreeing and spending countless hours with the people who Eminem grew up with and encountered on his way to the undisputed throne of rap.

Isabelle Esling was born in Saint Avold, a little French town near the German border.  She currently resides in London, England and can be reached for interviews at mathildeesling@yahoo.com .

My name is Isabelle Esling. I graduated from the University of Metz, France, where I studied Liberal Arts/ Languages. I have been teaching modern foreign languages in public and private schools, mainly as a German and French teacher.

I have always had a passion for writing and music, black music in particular. I discovered Eminem in 2001 and was very enthusiastic about the artist’s great talent, which motivated me to write about him. It also motivated me to explore the Detroit hip hop scene that is full of amazing artists.

In 2003, Gavin Sheridan, a technical writer and professional blogger offered me to be a contributing writer for his blog, which got me started as a freelance music journalist. In 2005, with Gavin’s help, I started The Eminem Blog where I expressed about the artist, the Detroit hip hop scene and other hip hop related subjects.

I have reviewed a wide range of CD’s and interviewed some consistent artists such as Dina Rae, DJ Butter, Big Proof of D12, just to name a few. The Eminem Blog gained me a worldwide audience of readers. I have also contributed to numerous hip hop websites such as Music Mouth UK, Detroit Rap Com, Michigan Bands and D Townie.

In 2006, I did some interviews for Jason Matthews Detroit digital magazine ILL Mag. Through the years I developed my craft, increased my knowledge of hip hop culture and also expressed on various subjects such as spirituality, humanities, beauty and lifestyle, movies etc…I keep writing at The Eminem Blog and sharing my passion with my readers till now.

My first book on Eminem and the Detroit scene has been released at Amber Books and Colossus Books on August the 6th, 2012. It is available at Amber Books, Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
